Even as you read this, Soviet and American spy satellites are orbiting the earth taking incredibly detailed pictures of military arsenals. During the first few hours of the Falklands War in 1982, the Soviet Union had photographed the entire Task Force preparation and knew more of what was happening than the British public.
Today more than three quarters of all satellites are used by the military and now the US is working on the Star Wars programme. The superpowers' reliance on space systems is so great that, should there ever be an East-West conflict, then it could well start miles above the earth.
In this remarkable and revealing book, Christopher Lee describes in simple terms the extent of military involvement in space, explains how so-far secret systems work and explores the frightening consequences of using space as a cosmic battleground. It is a riveting and intriguing tale - but one with a deadly sting.

At last here is the definitive biography of W. Somerset Maugham, one of the most remarkable and secretive literary figures of the twentieth century. Ted Morgan has penetrated the barriers which for years prevented the creation of a full portrait of this paradoxical writer— barriers set up by Maugham himself, who asked friends to destroy his correspondence, and who instructed his literary executor not to assist any eventual biographers.
Following the publication of several fragmentary memoirs and inaccurate biographies, which have served only to heighten the mystery surrounding Maugham's life, Maugham is the first full exploration of the writer and his works.
Maugham began his career in the Victorian era and was still writing in the nuclear age-his contemporaries including everyone from Rudyard Kipling to Norman Mailer. Unlike most nineteenth-century authors, Maugham took up writing as a full-time occupation. It made him a millionaire and filled his life with luxury and adventure. At his estate in the South of France he entertained the titled, the wealthy, and the famous — Churchill, the Windsors, the Aga Khan, and countless others.
His complicated, sometimes abrasive relationships with such writers as D. H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, Hugh Walpole, and Noel Coward helped to make him a somewhat dissident figure on the literary scene. His travels through Europe, the Orient, and the South Seas, and his work as a British spy during the world wars provided stories that made him the most widely read English novelist since Dickens.
But behind his facade of success and excitement Maugham was an emotional cripple who could not come to terms with his own homosexuality. He married, in an Edwardian attempt to keep up appearances, yet carried on a thirty-year love affair with Gerald Haxton, an alcoholic gambler who became his secretary. In his declining years; after Haxton's death, Maugham tried to disinherit his daughter and adopt Alan Searle, a Cockney youth who succeeded Haxton as his companion. He died a lonely and embittered figure, alienated even from his family, a man (continued from front flap)
who had survived the great writers of his age but who still felt overwhelmed by them.
In this extensive biography Mr. Morgan examines not only the people and events of Maugham's life but also the ways in which Maugham revealed himself through his fiction: through the alienated hero in Of Human Bondage, who shared Maugham's sado-masochistic view of love; through the short stories of Ashenden, which are at once tales of his espionage and a portrait of the author in middle age; through Cakes and Ale, in which he unwittingly predicted what he would experience in later life, that is, the phenomenon of the aging author —the less he writes, the more famous he becomes.
Mr. Morgan's work is the result of five years of research and writing, and is based on material previously undis-closed: over 5,000 of Maugham's letters recovered from research libraries and private collections, including Maughams previously restricted correspondence with his close American friend Bertram Alanson; over 100 letters of Alan Searle; the papers and diaries of Maugham's dear friendS. N. Behrman; and correspondence and interviews with people who knew him, including Ellen Doubleday, Alec Waugh, Rebecca West, Glenway Wescott, and Maugham's daughter, Lady Glendevon, who had, before speaking to Ted Morgan, refused to discuss her father with writers: Maugham is a brilliant work of scholarship, interpretation, and writing, as readable as one of Maugham's own novels, and in every way a classic.60
