AUSTRALIAN SURFING AND SURF LIFE SAVING presents in fascinating pictures and text a graphic survey of these popular sports. The history of surfing is given from the time when Captain Cook first observed board-riding in Hawaii to its rapid growth in Australia after Duke Kahanamoku demonstrated his skills in Sydney in 1915. However, in 1902 the editor of the Manly and North Sydney News advertised his intention of bathing at noon on three successive Sundays. As a result 'neck-to-knee® bathing was permitted and Australia's beaches were crowded every summer weekend.
The surf life saving movement commenced shortly afterwards, and Australia led the world in rescue techniques and safety patrols. The Australian competitive spirit soon found ways to increase the challenge for voluntary patrol members and the first association carnival was held in the 1914-15 season. Now a familiar sight on nearly every Australian beach, the movement has recorded the rescue of over 220000 people from the surf
